Unlock Hidden Space: Tips to Optimize Small Custom Closet

One of the privileges of my job is turning chaotic closets into organized sanctuaries. Small closets can pose a unique challenge, but they also offer a ton of opportunities to unveil hidden space and really wow their owners. In this article, I’ll share my experience and some valuable tips on how to optimize your small custom closet.

Here are some of the ways I like to work with smaller spaces:

  • Create tailor-made solutions
  • Embrace vertical storage options
  • Try dual-purpose furniture

If you’re ready to whip your small custom closet into shape, let’s get started!

Create Tailor-Made Solutions

Custom closets are completely adaptable to what you want them to be. Since they’re designed from the ground up, your new components will perfectly fit in your space. Not every closet is the same size, and some have architectural features, like sloped ceilings, a cubbyhole access, or an unusual nook or cranny. This means you have the option of having custom shelving, drawers, and compartments installed that will make the most of every inch of space.

Further, not every closet owner has the same types of clothing and accessories. One person might wear mostly separates while another wears full suits or long dresses. Maybe you have a dozen pairs of shoes, but your neighbor has a hundred. Your small closet should be customized to fit your needs, not someone else’s. Take a look at what you have and how you want to store it, then make changes based on that. One of my designers can work with you to create the system that will suit you best.

Embrace Vertical Storage Options

What your small closet might lack in floor space, it can make up for in wall and door space. Vertical storage can be a game-changer when it comes to finding hidden space in your small closet. I have a lot of experience with some of these approaches:

  • Adjustable shelves. Your wardrobe and needs will probably change over time, and having adjustable shelves allows you to adapt the space as desired. In December, for example, maybe you need more space on your shelves for sweaters than you do in June. My clients often love having the option to move shelving around as needed.
  • Hanging organizers. Hooks, pegs, and even hanging cubbies are useful for accessories, like scarves, purses, hats, and even light jackets. Keep these items at hand without having them take up room on your hanging rods by using hanging organizers.
  • Double hanging rods. If you have one hanging rod across the top of your closet, you’re not alone; that’s the most common configuration I see in non-optimized closets. Adding a second rod a few feet under the first lets you double your space.
  • Shoe storage. Shoes are an excellent candidate for vertical storage solutions. Rather than letting them take up room on the floor, we can install shoe racks that prevent you from tripping over your footwear and keep them from being crushed. Need more ideas for shoe storage? Try Dual-Purpose Furniture

Both in and out of the closet, you can use dual-purpose furniture and components to increase your storage space. I’ve seen the way multifunctional pieces can maximize space and add a touch of elegance to even the smallest closets.

Within the closet, you might consider a mirrored cabinet. This serves as a place to store various items, and it also lets you check out your outfit and hair before you even leave your closet space. It also creates the visual illusion of having more space; mirrors reflect light, which makes a space look bigger.

Outside the closet, you can add seating to your bedroom that doubles as storage space. An ottoman or bench with hidden storage lets you stash sweaters, jeans, handbags, or seasonal items. If you currently store extra blankets in your small closet, you could pull them out and put them in your bench or ottoman. The more you can store outside the closet, the more space you’ll have for items that need to stay in there.

Conclusion

I enjoy helping homeowners transform their small, cramped spaces into storage solutions that meet their needs. I can help you with all of the above suggestions.
