Are Walk-In Closets Suited for Small or Oddly-Shaped Rooms?

In the course of my work as a home organization specialist, I have come across homes with many interesting architectural features. Sometimes, a small primary bedroom will come with a large walk-in closet, for example. Other times, ceilings and sharp angles can make a closet challenging to work with. I have some ideas for making the most of a room with a unique size or shape with the help of custom closets.

Here are some options you can use for custom walk-in closets to suit small and oddly-shaped rooms:

  • Custom shelves to fit odd angles
  • Creative door options to consider
  • Angled components for sloping ceilings
  • Full dressing rooms in a large space

Let’s talk about these, and maybe it will give you some inspiration for your own closet!

Custom Shelves to Fit Odd Angles

Since custom closets are made specifically for the space they’re in, they can make good use of every inch of space. This means even in a room with odd angles or awkward spaces, shelves can be built to fit perfectly. While you could try purchasing shelves off the rack at a home improvement store, you’d have a lot of trimming to do, and if it doesn’t fit perfectly, you’d be dealing with gaps or warping.

For example, if a wall in your bedroom is at an unusual angle and meets the adjacent wall at an angle less than 90 degrees in the closet, there’s no need to worry; my team would be able to simply build shelves to match the angle – giving you good use of the corner and looking as though the system was built for the space (because it was).

Creative Door Options to Consider

Some primary bedrooms are quite small or don’t have a lot of clearance around the closet door. While the closet door isn’t something we include with our custom closet systems, it’s still something to think about.

If you can’t open the closet door all the way without it hitting a night table, the bed, or your dresser, you might consider a bifold door, as it takes up less space than a traditional full-swing door. This allows you to easily get in and out of the closet without banging the door into whatever’s in the way.

Another option to consider might be either a barn door or a pocket door. These slide out of the way; a barn door would slide onto the adjacent wall, and a pocket door would slide into the adjacent wall. Your decision would depend on the style of your bedroom and also whether there’s enough room on the nearby wall to accommodate the door.

Angled Components for Sloping Ceilings

If you have your walk-in closet in an upstairs bedroom, you might have angled or sloped ceilings in the bedroom itself or in the closet. Since the angled ceiling in the main part of the bedroom might impact the amount of storage space you have available, maximizing the potential of the closet is particularly important.

This is another area where either angled shelves or suspended hanging rods might be used to make the most of the space. Storage cubbies are another good option for a sloped ceiling; they’d be deeper along the bottom of the slope and shallower as the wall slopes inward toward the top. You could store shoes or larger bins in the bottom cubbies and items, like small purses or even framed artwork, in the top sections.

Full Dressing Rooms in a Large Space

Finally, you may have a room that’s quite large or that comes with a large closet space. Make the most of it by installing components that create a luxurious dressing room. Consider putting in glass-front cabinets, an island, a dressing table or vanity, or even some seating.

In this case, you might consider your closet to be an extension of your bedroom to the point that you spend time inside of it. Better Homes & Gardens offers more tips on creating a dressing room in a closet or even in a corner of your bedroom.

Conclusion

The size of your room and closet are unique to each home; even if you have the same square footage as someone else in your neighborhood, you probably use the space differently. I work with homeowners with various types of architecture and lots of unique features in their homes. Give me or my team a call to schedule a free consultation to go over your home, and let’s discuss how we can meet your needs with a new custom walk-in closet system.
